COMAC Partners with AECC in Engine Development

State-owned manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) Thursday signed a cooperation agreement with the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) in Beijing.

The collaboration will relate to engine and auxiliary power unit development for Chinese-made commercial aircraft. This will involve personnel exchanges and resource sharing, to bring mutual benefits and promote the development of the Chinese aerospace industry, COMAC said in a statement.

Launched in this August, AECC aims to develop domestic jet engines, reducing the need for foreign-made parts, so as to create a self-sufficient aerospace sector that can serve commercial and military aviation needs with homegrown technology.

China has designed two passenger jets, ARJ21 and C919, both rely on foreign suppliers for their engines and other major components.

The ARJ21 regional jet, a 78-to-90-seater that entered commercial service in June, uses engines produced by General Electric Co., while the single-aisle C919 jetliner -- still under development-- will be powered by engines made by CFM International.

Besides, COMAC has a wide-body program C929, which will be jointly developed with Russia.
