Xi an Jiaotong University Launches Large Aircraft Research Institute, Focusing on Additive Manufacturing

On March 29, Xi’an Jiaotong University officially inaugurated three platforms at the China Western Science and Technology Innovation Harbor: the Space Manufacturing Research Institute, the Large Aircraft Research Institute, and the Interdisciplinary Center for National Security Studies. Zhang Liqun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Xi‘an Jiaotong University, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. Relevant members of the Strategic Advisory Committee, Science and Technology Committee, Technical Committee, and Academic Committee of the three platforms also participated in related events.

The large aircraft industry embodies a national strategic will, characterized by a long industrial chain, wide-ranging influence, and strong ripple effects. The Large Aircraft Research Institute at Xi’an Jiaotong University focuses on areas such as additive manufacturing for large aircraft, overall structural design, testing and diagnostics. It aims to deepen industry-university-research collaboration, partner with leading enterprises in the sector, advance applied disciplines including mechanical engineering, energy and power engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, instrumentation, and aerospace engineering, while also driving progress in corresponding fundamental disciplines. The institute is committed to cultivating outstanding engineers and top-tier innovative talents in the field of large aircraft.

Zhang Liqun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Xi‘an Jiaotong University, stated that he hopes the three platforms will blaze new trails in achieving technological self-reliance and self-strengthening, and tackle key core technologies. He emphasized deepening the integration of industry, academia, and research, strengthening strategic cooperation with leading industry enterprises, transforming research advantages into educational strengths, and creating exemplary practices that serve regional economic and social development. He also urged the platforms to remain committed to the original aspiration of educating people for the Party and the nation, build a first-class talent team, help the region develop a world-class aerospace industry cluster, and fully support the high-quality development and the cultivation of new quality productive forces in western China.

Base on this, 15th Annual Civil Aircraft Industry Eco-Conference 2025 will be held on May 14th-15th in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, China, The The forum e will focus on the successful market-oriented operation of domestic and international subcontracting activities. More than 400 are expected to attend, key enterprises across the civil aircraft manufacturing supply chain—including final assembly, sub-assembly, fuselage manufacturing, systems development, and outsourced component and machining services will be present. The forum aims to strengthen the civil aircraft industry chain through technical exchange and cooperation, and to help build a safer, more reliable and more economical supply chain system.
