Xiamen Airlines Head Says HK Can Help C919 Break into Global Market

Hong Kong could serve as a strategic hub for mainland’s homemade aircraft C919 to enter international markets, said Zhao Dong, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of Xiamen Airlines.

The C919, a narrow-body passenger jet manufactured by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, is actively pursuing overseas certifications, including from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, as part of its global expansion.

Zhao said at the Two Sessions in Beijing that it is “only a matter of time” for C919 to secure overseas certifications and establish a foothold in foreign markets.

“The technology of domestically produced aircraft and engines is improving, but it will require more time to break into international markets and obtain certifications from other countries,” Zhao said.

Li Yangmin, former general manager of China Eastern Airlines and a CPPCC member, revealed that 14 C919 aircraft had been delivered since 2022, carrying over 1 million passengers by the end of last year.

Li noted that domestic travelers have been “highly satisfied” with their experience in C919, with the aircraft achieving exceptionally high load factors, among the best in the airline’s fleet.

He added that the airline has ordered more than 100 C919 jets and is adjusting its fleet configuration.

Deputy general manager of Aero Engine Corporation of China Commercial Aircraft Engine Shao Chi, also a CPPCC member, expressed confidence in the progress of the country’s aviation engine technology, citing improvements in industrial base and technical capabilities.

“Artificial intelligence can empower various industries, including civil aviation, to propel the development of aviation equipment,” he added.
