  • China Increasing Output Of Strong Carbon Fiber

    Theworld’sstrongestcarbonfiberis TorayIndustries’T100G,saystheJapanesemanufacturer.NowChina, deniedaccesseventolowergradesfromforeignsuppliers,isworkingon matchingit. ChinamakesalimitedvolumeofT800—alower-gradebutstillverystrong fiberthatitcannotbuyfromWesterncountriesandJapan—andplansare afoottobuildaplantwith20timesthecurrentcapacity.These advancescouldimprovetheperformanceofChinesemilitaryaircraftand, eventually,bringChinaintotheglobalmarketforaerospacematerials, inwhichithassofarhadnegligiblepresence. CompositemanufacturingisprobablyprofitabletotheChinesestate firms,becausecivilaircraftarenottheironlymarket,saysan industryofficial.Chinesemilitaryordersarecontractedatcostplus anagreedprofit,explainingwhythesupplierscanmakemoney.Thereis littlemanufacturingofcompositesforChinesecivilaircraft:Comac’s firstone,theARJ21regionaljet,hasonly1.5%compositecontent. China’sstatecompaniesarenotyetsupplyingaerospacealuminumtothe globalmarket,althoughtheymakethematerialforChinesemilitary aircraftandcivilaircraftwhosecertificationisnotrecognizedby developedcountries.That,too,isabouttochange,however.Airbusis workingtoqualifymetalfromthegovernment’sSouthwestAluminum.The materialwillbeconventionalaerospace-gradealuminum,notthemore recentadvancedaluminumsoraluminum-lithium,saysAntoineGaugler, Airbus’spurchasingmanagerforAsia.Aleris,aU.S.company,hassetup aplanttomakeconventionalaerospacealuminumineasternChinaat Zhenjiang(AW&STMay27,p.37).   • Esterline seeking to participate in MA700 project

    From: Aircraftmanufacturing-OpportunityDetail-XportReporter EsterlinePowerSystemsisseekingopportunitiesgeneratedfromthe launchofMA700project,thenewgenerationturbopropregionalaircraft developmentbyAVICAircraft(中航飞机),accordingtoEsterlinepresident MarkThek. ThecompanyisapplyingtoparticipateintheMA700projectthroughitsjointventurewithAVIC,saidMarkonthesidelinesof“2013AeroElectromechanicsChina”heldbyGalleonEventsrecentlyinXi’an. Thejointventure,calledGuizhouLeach-TianyiAviationElectrical Co.(贵州利奇-天义航空电器有限公司,wasestablishedbetweenEsterlineandTianyi ElectricalCo(天义电器),anAVICsubsidiaryinZunyi,GuizhouProvince,in 1999.Itproducesrelays,contactsandotherpowerdistribution componentsusedinaviationelectricpowersystems.AccordingtoMark, theJVplaysamajorroleinassemblybyimportingcomponentsfrom Esterline.EsterlinethenresellstheseproductstoBoeingandAirbusas wellasotheraviationsystemcontractors. AstheChineseaviationindustrygrows,Esterlinehasexpandeditssales toChinathroughtheJV.“Ourpartnerhasgoodconnectionsinthe industry,”saidMark,addingthattheyrelyontheChinesepartnerto developChinesemarket. IthassupplieditsproductstoNorthCarolina-basedUTCAerospace System,whichwillfinallyprovidetheelectricsystemforC919,the narrow-bodycommercialaircraftChinaisdevelopingunderCommercial AviationCorporationofChina(Comac). Markintroducedthatitsproductsarealsousedinseveraltypesof aircraftsindependentlydevelopedbyChina,includingMA60,theprevious versionofMA700,Y12,thelightmultifunctionalaircraftdevelopedby AVICHarbinAircraftIndustryCo.andARJ21,theregionaljetdeveloped byComac. XportreporterhasreportedthatAVICShaanxiAeroElectricCo(陕西航空电气), whichhaswonacontractwithUTAStosupplyelectricsystemforC919, willparticipateinthedevelopmentofMA700.ShaanxiAeromakespower generationanddistributioncomponentsanditrevealsthatitmayseek internationalpartnersandimportcomponents.
